Embroidery Guidelines

Embroidery Art Guidelines

Artwork for embroidery is far less exacting than that required for all other processes, because the artwork is just a starting point for digitizing, which is the process of converting the logo into a design which will actually run on embroidery equipment. In general, any file or piece of printed material which shows the logo in full color at about the same size that the finished design will be will work. Keep in mind that not all designs can be done in embroidery, regardless of the quality of the artwork. For example, small text (less than 1/4" high) often creates difficulties, especially when sewing on thin knit materials such as polos and tee-shirts. Fine detail can also pose problems. We can often simplify fine details to create a version of your logo which will sew well and look good.

Color shading is another problem area in embroidery. In printing, a color can be "faded." For example, large letters can be darker at the top than at the bottom. This is practically impossible in embroidery, except for very large designs. Generally color shading can be left out of a logo and it will still look good. Part of the purpose of color shading techniques is to make the logo appear to be more 3-dimensional, and embroidery brings a real 3-dimensional texture to your logo on its own.

Logo Size:

The average left chest logo size is 2 inches x 3 1/2 inches. The lettering (text) must be 3/8" high to be legible for knit shirts; smaller text is possible on more stable fabrics such as wovens and twills. Text should be 1/2" high for "fuzzy" fleece due to the loft of the material.

Screen Printing

Screen Printing

Screen Printing Guidelines

Screen-printing requires finished artwork which is about 300 dots per inch (dpi) or equivalent at the finished size or better. Also, since each color is printed as a separate screen, the artwork must allow for color separation. Electronic formats such as .jpg, and .gif do not allow for this technique, and are usually quite "coarse," as 72 dpi is the standard resolution for the web and desktop publishing. So if you are providing finished art for screen printing, it must be an .eps, .pdf or .tif file. These formats are supported by most professional grade graphics programs and allow our art department to create separations needed to burn screens.

Embroidery vs Screen Printing

Embroidery vs. Screen Printing

Embroidery

The classy look is best achieved with embroidery as it's in a class all it own.
Benefits:
  • Embroidery is richer and generally more attractive.
  • There are no minimum quantities, 1 to 1 million pieces.
  • There are usually no setup fees associated with embroidery.
  • Should hold up better and isn't as susceptible to extreme conditions such as heat.
  • Embroidery can be more detailed with no additional costs for multiple colors.
  • Fast turn around once proofs have been approved.
Cons:
  • Embroidery can put a lot of thread on the item being embroidered. The weight of the thread for a large design on thin items such as a T-Shirts can cause the shirt to hang or fray.
  • Digitizing process for embroidery involves converting the provided artwork into a stitch tape that the embroiderer's machine interprets. This process usually cost more then the set up for printing, anywhere between $50 and $150 depending on the complexity of the design. However the charge is only applied to the first order and therefore there would be no additional digitizing charges for future orders with the same design.

Screen Printing

One of the most flexible mediums in the garment decoration market screen printing is very popular. From a colorful T-shirt design to one color logos on a polo shirt, screen printing can handle it all.
Benefits:
  • Screen printing is less expensive than embroidery on a per piece basis. This is especially true if you plan to do a large area such as the full back or front of a tee shirt. As an example a large area such as the full back of a shirt, embroidery will run between $5.00 and $15.00 per item while screen printing will cost between $1.00 and $4.00 per item depending on the number of colors and the quantity. The higher the number of pieces, the lower the cost per piece.
  • Screen printed logos can be a lot more elaborate and detailed then embroidery. Almost any design can be screen printed whereas some designs are impossible to embroider.
Cons:
  • Because screens have to be set up and paint applied to those screens, the minimum quantity for printing is 12. Whereas the minimum quantity for embroidery is one.
  • There is a set up cost associated with screen printing of $30 per color. However this is a one time charge and future repeat setup costs are completed at a reduced price.
